Snow Alerts

Snow Alert Notification from the City of Harrisburg

The City of Harrisburg will issue a “Snow Alert” when an accumulation of 2 inches is forecasted for the area or, if no prior warning has been given, when snowplows are dispatched. This alert may also apply to blowing or drifting snow that requires plowing.

The city will make every effort to issue alerts promptly; however, due to the unpredictable nature of weather, it is the responsibility of citizens to stay informed about conditions and to remove vehicles, trailers, and other belongings from streets and alleys.

Parking Regulations

  • On-street parking is prohibited on both sides of the street, regardless of its direction.

  • Vehicles left parked on the street may be subject to ticketing and towing.

  • Parking may resume only after the snow alert has concluded.

Please note: Ticketing will begin once the plows are dispatched, which may occur at any time after the snow alert is issued. Vehicles, trailers, and other items are at risk of receiving tickets throughout the entire duration of the snow alert. Towing of vehicles, trailers, and other items will commence 24 hours after a ticket has been issued.

Winter Weather Advice

When it is snowing, or snow is in the forecast, refrain from parking on city streets and alleys. Residents are encouraged to monitor local news outlets, official County/City websites, and official social media pages for updates and information.

Expect snowplows to make unanticipated maneuvers such as backing up and making wide turns. The Amber warning lights on snow removal equipment are there to alert motorists and remind them to yield the right of way.

Stay at least 70 feet (4 car lengths) back when you are following behind snowplows and other snow removal equipment so the maintenance vehicle driver can see you. Snowplow drivers have limited vision from the inside of their vehicles.

Do not travel beside snowplows or other snow removal equipment. They can veer sideways very easily by force of the snow on the plow blade.

Be patient. City crews are working to make the streets safe for everyone!

Remove snow, ice from sidewalks, crosswalks, and around fire hydrants on your property within 48 hours of snowfall.

Mailboxes

If a resident wishes to have mail delivery to their home, it is the homeowner's responsibility to put up and maintain their mailbox in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Harrisburg City Post Office. The City of Harrisburg is not responsible for repairing or replacing any mailboxes damaged due to snow removal. We request that you make sure your mailboxes are completely upright and are properly maintained.
